...while out walking the dog at lunch came across a fence surrounding the old Sendar property on the northeast corner of 9th and Q...Mr Q doesn't usually get so excited by fencing and is trying to keep his wits about him, but seriously, could this mean this place might FINALLY be renovated and possible OCCUPIED?

Time will tell...continuing a very hot walk with the cutest dog in the whole wide world, Mr Q also came across Kelsey Gardens/Addison Square - a reality check since that eyesore has had a fence around it for at least two years now? But here's hoping that same "suspended in time" fate doesn't await 9th and Q...

CityMarket at O may have had a ceremonial groundbreaking in September 2010 (with pitiful results thus far), but Mr Q prefers to see some REAL ground breaking that involves actual dirt moving - like the kind he sees on the north side of 8th and P Street NW...courtesy of Capital City Real Estate.

A quick check on their website shows the future project is actually on their home page (note to Cap City - your new project is in SHAW, not Shawn...but that's neither here nor there since Mr Q is just happy to see someone follow through with a project within a reasonable period of time...and I have no problem with you latching onto Logan for marketing efforts either)!!

Smaller projects seem to be moving along all over the 'hood...here's hoping O Street Market and Kelsey Gardens follows suit....someday.

Mr Q walks by this building often and was wondering when something might happen...looks like the time is now according to the WBJ...could be a cool spot for a restaurant or retail! And the naming potential should be off the charts given its quirky location and history, but of course its in DC, it'll probably be named "Restaurant 433" or something equally creative...

...if you're interested there is now a CityMarket at O blog being maintained by Roadside Development (I think), I found this link via Jack Evan's newsletter last week...it will be interesting to see how often it's updated - if we can't actually SEE the start of construction at least we can continue to read about it!

And in 2011, Shaw continues to be THE location for affordable housing alternatives in DC! Because the area doesn't have enough affordable housing with Lincoln-Westmoreland, Gibson Plaza, 1330 7th Street, etc., now we have this proposal....

It's not clear to Mr Q what is so terrible about a small percentage of market rate housing in the 'hood, and especially on top of a metro stop where there is a continuous string of robberies, but obviously the powers that be feel otherwise...

...in case you're interested in reading an article re: Metropolitan REALLY having their financing together this time, and in "several months" will demolish the eyesore that is Kelsey Gardens, here's something new today from the City Paper...although hopefully it's good news the tax abatement has an expiration date of July 2011 - maybe it will provide some motivation? Mr Q has blisters from keeping his fingers crossed so he's just going to hope for the best in 2011...

Mildred Pierce on HBO?

Mr Q has a slight recollection of hearing about this project, but is excited to see an actual preview of one of his favorite movies of all time...Mildred Pierce! It's HBO and Kate Winslet so let's hope its good...although he finds the opera music a bit overly dramatic...Mr Q and the Gardener watch all their HBO series on a delayed basis via Netflix so they may need to find an HBO watching friend to hang out with so they can see this in 2011 and not late 2012 on DVD...

And as good as the HBO series might be, it will NEVER match the original with Joan Crawford as Mildred and Ann Blyth as Veda!

...is the only reason Mr Q will be tuning in to the premiere of Desparate Housewives next month...he signed off that show a few seasons ago due to its horrible writing, ridiculous character development and convoluted storylines...

For some reason their promo pictures always make the show look way better than it actually is...and this year is no different...Vanessa Williams in the center of a Wild West setting is perfect! Why can't they translate this kind of creativity to the show???

Mr Q is reminded of how the writers completely wasted one of his favorite actresses, the wonderful in pretty much everything, Ms. Alfre Woodward...

unfortunately Marc Cherry had no idea how to capitalize on her talents...

And now Vanessa Williams is coming to Wisteria Lane...too bad she couldn't bring the writers from Ugly Betty with her...Mr Q still is mourning the loss of Wilhelmina Slater and the gang from MODE...

....which video will be recreated when Britney guest stars on GLEE this fall?

Mr Q is a big fan of GLEE (yes, it has weak plot lines at times and inconsistent character development, but for the most part it's a fun musical fantasy...and w/ Lea Michele, cutey pie Mr. Schuster and Jane Lynch...that's how Sue C's it!)...ok, I'm way off track...Mr Q thought he'd love the Madonna episode (he's a fan of M in case you haven't heard)...but it did not live up to his expectations...and that's mainly because they tried to make the storyline fit the music (by Madonna) instead of the reverse...much better to decide the ongoing story arcs and find music that fits the characters and storyline right? Obviously Ryan Murphy doesn't agree with me...

So QSN was not happy to hear GLEE will be doing the same thing w/ "It's Britney Bitch" next season along with the possibility of a second Madonna offering...in Mr Q's opinion taking the show in this direction is a direct path to "remember that musical show that was on for what, like one or two seasons???...what was the name of it again??"...

But whatever...you can bet when GLEE comes back Mr Q will be in front of his TV...or his DVR will be there so he can enjoy it at his leisure...

OK, it's been forever...well, since March 30th since my last post...and what do I talk about but 636 Q Street again!

The property was indeed sold and it appears in the fine tradition of half-assed reconstruction projects in Shaw that an additional story is being added to this lovely old property!

Questions abound if the new property owner actually has permits for this addition, but if Mr Q hears anything he'll be sure to let you know!

Baby steps in Shaw...

Mr Q has been in a winter funk the last couple of months...too much snow, too many clouds, way too cold for way too long...

But SPRING is finally here and the funk is lifting...

Walking around the lovely neighborhood we call Shaw, the sunny skies and warmer temperatures almost make me forget about all the BIG projects that seem to be indefinitely delayed...or gone for good...yep, Radio One has disappeared, Addison Square is in limbo, and although there are rumors about Citymarket at O starting in September...they have their financing lined up so says the grapevine...Mr Q will believe it when he sees it...

But Spring is not a time for cynicism is it?? The answer is no.

There are signs of development on a much smaller scale we should all be happy about...

For instance, the old abandoned properties at the corners of 8th and Q Street have been sold by Shiloh Baptist Church and are actually being renovated!! There's a new construction fence going up on the southeast corner as we speak...

...and the northwest corner started construction a couple of months back...rumor has it the developer is the same person that did the spectacular job at the corner of 10th and Rhode Island...if true, that is very good news indeed...

So get a spring in your step, breathe in deeply and look for the small changes in the 'hood...hopefully they're a sign bigger and better things are on the way...

This sign just went up today for the property which was bought sometime in 2007 by ASALH, who started renovations and then left it vacant for the next two plus years...
the alley next to this property doubles as a restroom for the 7th & Q Social Club who hangs at the Warrenton Group's headquarters (e.g. 1547 7th Street NW)...
Mr Q has become skeptical of "For Sale" signs in the 'hood...
Not sure if this is for real or yet another tax scam/strategy by the property owner...looked up the website for the Horizon Group, but didn't see a listing for this property...or on Redfin...but maybe its just not entered into the system...

Let's hope for the best and this property sees better days ahead...

Agreed, inequality won't be ended by one March down Pennsylvania Avenue, but it doesn't hurt to remind the President of his campaign promises and in Mr Q's opinion, it's one more step along the long journey to gaining equal rights for ALL Americans...

There has been a lot of debate whether a protest like this is the best use of everyone's time and energy without more specific goals than "equality", but Mr Q doesn't really see the downside...if you're in the DC area, and you care about equal rights for yourself, your friends or your family,
please make an effort to show up!!

And on a related note...
a story about the Catholic Church (with its tax-exempt status) using its
parishioners donations for very political purposes...

"Maine's Catholic churchgoers were asked to make an additional donation on Sunday toward repealing the marriage equality law in the state. Church officials said the donations would pay for television ads and campaign efforts to overturn the law in this November's upcoming vote."

...the Emmy's tonight - Sunday, September 20th!

On a whole, television is less than exciting these days - Jay Leno on in prime time? Ugh.

Awards for what they're doing seem a tad ridiculous, but if Neil Patrick Harris does half the job he did as host of the Tony Awards it should still be a fun show...Mr Q loves anyone that can throw together a very clever song DURING the awards show and perform it LIVE for a closing number!! Impressive!

And let's hope for some tacky outfits this year! Enough "old Hollywood glamour" already!!
Take some fashion risks people! It makes for good TV...

For someone that was such a driving force behind inventive, well-produced music videos and works out 2 hours a day you would think she could put SOMETHING decent together that what we've seen in her last two or three videos...all big snores...Mr Q isn't holding his breath "Revolver" will be any better...

It seems like ABC is giving up on poor Betty by shoving it to a Friday night time slot...Friday night is like the waiting room prior to cancellation but Mr Q is hoping for the best! I love my Betty! Most of the time anyway...Daniel's dying girlfriend, not so much...

This year I hear Betty gets a bit of a makeover which makes perfect sense, and Scottish Christina and embezzling Conor return...at least for a while...and rumor has it Paula Abdul will be a temp in Mode's office for an episode or two!

Here's a little preview of Season 4...Mark and Amanda (I'll aim for a cankle!) are in top form and nobody plays Wilhelmina better than Vanessa Williams...and check out Betty's ex-boyfriend's great new hairdo! He looks fab...

Mr Q has just taken a temporary mental break and been away a lot lately...
there was a trip to the Cape to see some magical humpback whales....

And a trip to the NY State Fair to see some magical pigs...

And then the ultimate in poor taste...
eating some magically delicious pulled pork sandwiches and sausages at the very same Fair!!

And otherwise there's been recovery time from vacations (oh yeah, and work) and catching up with the smoldering Don Draper on Mad Men...
Season 1 was excellent...Season 2 gets odder...and I'm not sure what they're doing with Season 3 but Mr Q isn't excited about the merger with the British company...but he's hoping for the best because I love Mad Men...

Thankfully Joannie is still running around the office in her crazy red hair and even crazier tight dresses...
And speaking of just plain crazy...

Disappointed in the "Celebration" video by Madonna and hoping it's not the official one...
Enough still-motion dancing M! You look fab, but this video is just like "Give it 2 Me"....zzzzzzz...you can do SOOOO much better than this....

There are sooo many "For Sale" signs on abandoned properties around town - even SHILOH BAPTIST CHURCH properties...please, please, please be for real and won't someone please buy them??? And can the sign on Kelsey Gardens please be for real and start construction in 2010???

9th and Q condos (apartments?) are looking GREAT!!

And there's an "Under Contract" sign on the shell at 604 P Street NW...
would LOVE to know who bought it and what their plans are...it could be spectacular...

OK, I know its only a banner and everyone (including Mr Q) won't really believe it until the bulldozers show up, but this made my Friday! Someone went to the trouble to have that banner made and attach it to the fence, so I'm going to see it as a positive development!

Could it really be true and the construction might even begin within the year? Doubtful it would be completed in 2010, but even if they were to start in 2010 it would be a vast improvement to this stretch of 7th between P & Q...

Here's hoping...if anyone has any more current info on this project, please feel free to share!!

In case you're interested in learning more about the policies (and amenities!) of the
7th and Q Social Club
that hangs in front of Warren Williams vacant property at 1547 7th Street NW...

(According to the tax records this property is owned by Williams Seven Street LLC at a mailing address of 9003 Levelle Drive, Chevy Chase, MD 20815...
just plug 1547 7th Street NW on the link, click on Property Tax Data and see for yourself..)

I'm sure Mr. Williams supports a sister group of this Social Club in Chevy Chase as well...

They considerately store much of their garbage in a bag tied to the vacant building...

But sometimes they miss and the treebox at 7th and Q NW will do...

This alley off of Q is the Club's personal bathroom -

apparently the ASALH people who seem to have left this property at 636 Q Street vacant aren't concerned about the urine and occasional poo sprayed against it every day...

And when the Club adjourns for the day they store their furniture right around the corner from their gathering spot...makes it very convenient to find a seat for the next day's meeting...

If you're interested in joining, just grab a plastic crate and come over and sit a spell...
The Club usually gathers around noon and adjourns around 7pm each night...although weekends might start earlier and end later...and it's BYOB of course...

OK, let's get this out of the way first - this may be the lamest Saturday Night Eats review EVER...how much credibility can a restaurant review have when none of the reviewers try the specialty of the house??!!

Yes, Mr Q, the Gardener, Holay and surprise guest AJ checked out Granville Moore's on H Street NE Saturday night and DID NOT have the mussels!! Wacky but true...

Mr Q wasn't sure if he enjoyed mussels enough to make them his main entree and Holay was just recovering from a recent stomach malady and didn't think selecting mussels as one of her first meals post-recovery was a good idea...as much as she loves them. The Gardener and AJ are definitely not mussel fans...so there you have it...no mussels...sad.

We did start our dinner with some excellent Belgian beers - AJ chose the Affligem ($6), I followed his lead (copy cat!) and the Gardener chose a Wittekerke ($6)...Holay went with ice water (see stomach malady above)...they also brought us a small basket of bread, but no butter or olive oil and truthfully the bread was dry without either of those things...

Service was excellent, ambience very nice in a rustic way and reminiscent of dimly lit establishments the Gardener and I visited many years ago in Belgium...we definitely enjoyed it although the two of us did need the candle on the table to read our menus...the younger and more vital duo of AJ and Holay needed no extra luminescence to read their menus...

Along with our beers we ordered the antipasto ($7)...AJ raved over the cheese and the bread...we all enjoyed the salami (with the exception of Holay who did not partake), and I even enjoyed the pickled veggies which is very unlike me...the olives were all for the Gardener...

AJ enjoyed the Bison Steak and Cheese which includes Braised Brisket, Onion, Cheddar, Horseradish Crème and Frites ($13.50)...he gave the dish the highest compliment Mr Q believes anyone can give...he would definitely order it again!!

Mr Q had the special fish of the day...a whole Trout with more Frites ($16)...the fish was tender and well-cooked and seasoned perfectly...I'd definitely get it again if it shows up on the menu...

Which now leads us to the dreaded Chicken Sandwich ($13.50) incident of 2009...the Gardener AND Holay BOTH went for it...Holay requested no cheese and no bun (she's gluten-free now)...both the Gardener and Holay described the chicken as overdone, dry and not even very warm...did not go over well. The frites were good...and obviously plentiful but the chicken got a BIG thumbs down...

Even in this picture it appears the chicken is embarrassed by its lack of flavor and is hiding under the bun!!

We were actually too full for dessert although they did offer cheesecake and brownies...but we passed...

We went over to H Street Country Club to check that out...lucked into 4 seats at the downstairs bar...cute place...pulling in the masses like crazy on a Saturday night...the DC-themed putt-putt golf upstairs looks fun but crowded...skee ball for 50 cents a game was a good deal...and we were pleasantly surprised to find plenty of skee-ballin' eye candy everywhere!!

We then ventured into the H Street Martini Bar and had a Blueberry Muffin martini for dessert...it was quite delicious...AJ and Mr Q both give it a thumbs up...the Gardener enjoyed his South Beach martini...and Holay...well, she enjoyed another ice water!!
That gal is well-hydrated!!

All in all a fun Saturday night is to be found on H Street NE...Holay and Mr Q WILL go back to Granville Moore's one day and actually try their mussels...
When that day rolls around another review will show up here on QSN!!

Not sure if this is a case of Mr Q being unobservant to changes in the 'hood
(hard to believe I know), or if this is a fairly recent development,
but while walking TCDITWWW today I noticed the ugly used car lot
at the corner of P St NW and Marion has disappeared!

Where did it go?

Was this part of the Fenty used car lot clean up or is there something
actually planned for this piece of land? Would that be too much to hope for??

Even if it sits there empty, Mr Q has to say he prefers an empty lot to a used car business that never actually seemed to be selling used cars...

Out walking the CDITWWW and came across this sign on a building on the
southeast corner of 6th and Q....

Appears on July 28th at 9:30am there's a hearing to consider a special zoning exception
to allow a change from a valet shop to a RESTAURANT(?!) at 1551 6th St NW...

This may be a result of Mr Q being such a bad attendee at local ANC meetings, but does anyone know what kind of restaurant is being considered for the 1st floor of this building?

Another adventure...

Mr Q and the Gardener are off on another adventure for Independence Day weekend...some hot sun, cold beer, t-shirts and flip flops is just what the doctor ordered...

Bullpen at Nats Stadium AND Flashback Friday...

Mr Q has been in a self-induced Netflix coma over the last week and has had little time to post...and can anyone tell me why The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was an Oscar nominated movie?? Please...when Mr Q is waiting for Brad Pitt to just shut up and age backward already you KNOW something's wrong...do some film editing people!! 2 hours and 46 minutes??!!

C'mon...the only movie that should be that long is the Sex and the City sequel or anything starring Madonna...

OK, I'm completely off track...

Mr Q had a delightful evening last night at the Bullpen at Nationals Stadium last night...he was headed there with Long John Erie and his friend 2Knees with every intention of actually entering the stadium so we could meet Big D who was there with a bunch of company folk...however, plans changed when we got to the box office and were told there were no $5 tickets and the cheapest tix were $18! Not a crazy extravagant price, but we decided to check out The Bullpen across the street, have a beer and think it over before we laid out the cash...

It was about then that Mr Q got it into his head that The Gardener would be passing right by the stadium on his way home from work and maybe he could pick up a gym bag Mr Q obviously had no use for anymore that evening, so he made the call and The Gardener obliged Mr Q's request and stopped by!

The Gardener was super lucky to get parking so he and The Cutest Dog in the Whole Wide World ("TCDITWWW") also joined us (yes, no one said anything about bringing TCDITWWW in) for $6 16oz Bud Light Limes at the Bullpen...which is $2 LESS than they sell them for INSIDE the stadium!

Which brings me to my point...the Bullpen is a delightful place to spend an evening if you haven't been there already...it's outside...has picnic tables, hot dogs, tacos, bean bag games...a completely kick-ass DJ and then a live BAND!! We were there for hours!! Good job owners of the Bullpen! We love what you've done to a completely empty lot!!

OK, one more thing before the video...Mr Q was checking out GMA this morning and thought he was in some weird parallel universe when the first story had Cher in it -
Chastity's becoming Chaz!! Wow!!

When is a vacant property a vacant property?

The Long & Foster signs are gone and 1547 7th Street NW (aka the southeast corner of 7th & Q NW) is once again off the market...guess no one was interested in picking it up at the low, low price of $1.3 million!

It currently appears to be some type of social club with 10-15 local residents meeting outside of it each afternoon...

So I know there are a lot of people out there more knowledgeable about these things than Mr Q...is this just a game by the owner (Warren Williams?) to avoid the vacant property tax rate?

And how often can a slumlord...err...property owner play this game without someone getting a clue? If this property is "off the market" for 6 months is it considered vacant again??? Anyone know? Or know who to contact to report it?
